EEG Biofeedback

EEG Biofeedback, sometimes known as neurofeedback, is a new treatment modality that has been shown to be effective in treating Attention Deficit Disorder, stroke, mild head injury and other neurological and immunological conditions. Patients learn, over time, how to train their own brain waves by seeing their own EEG on a computer screen. The patient learns to modify brain waves in ways that are known to be helpful for that particular person's electrophysiology. One advantage of neurofeedback is that medication can be reduced or eliminated in some cases. A more complete description of the treatment can be found in this PDF document (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader). In order for neurofeedback to have a good chance of working, the patient should plan on coming at least twice per week for a minimum of 10 weeks. The fee for this is $150 per session. On Saturdays, neurofeedback sessions can be done by a trainee at $75 per session. Availability for Saturday sessions may vary, however.

Cognitive Remediation

For learning disabilities, head injury, and other problems of brain dysfunction, cognitive remediation is often recommended. This consists of structured exercises designed to improve weak cognitive abilities. The exact deficiencies can be determined by an evaluation similar to ones that are mentioned elsewhere on this website. Doing cognitive remediation while also doing neurofeedback can be especially effective. Fees range from $75 to $150 per session, depending on the practitioner.

Psychotherapy

Having ADD or a learning disability can be upsetting or confusing in a number of ways. Dr. Thomas is available for individual psychotherapy sessions during weekdays for these or any other psychological condition. The fee is $150 per 50 minute session. Insurance assignment is not accepted, and Dr. Thomas is on no panels. However, he is a licensed psychologist (NY#6781), and his services should be reimbursable. A receipt can be given so that the patient can get reimbursed from the insurance company.
